General Election Overview: 6th U.S. House District

Through the general election on November 3, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District

The 6th U.S. House District is located in lower Southwest Michigan. It includes Berrien, Cass, Kalamazoo, St Joseph, and Van Buren Counties, and a portion of Allegan County.

Commentary

Congressman Fred Upton is running for another term in office, having first been elected in 1987. The district has a 59% Republican base. His Democratic opponent has represented a portion of this district for three terms in the Michigan House, providing some name recognition. In 2016, President Trump received 54.48% of the vote, while in 2018 Governor Whitmer received 49.93% of the vote.

Congressman Upton serves on the following committees:

    • Energy and Commerce
      • Subcommittee on Energy (Chairman)

Democratic Candidate:

    • Jon Hoadley –State Representative, small business owner, president of a public affairs firm.

Republican Candidate:

    • Congressman Fred Upton – U.S. Representative, worked in the Office of Management and Budget under the President Reagan administration.
