General Election Overview: 61st House District

Sep 13, 2016

Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).

District Overview

The 61st House District is located in Kalamazoo County and includes the townships of Oshtemo, Prairie Ronde, Schoolcraft, and Texas, in addition to a portion of the City of Portage.  It has a 54% Republican base.

Commentary

Representative Brandt Iden (R-Oshtemo Township) is running for his second term in the legislature.  In 2014, Representative Iden won the seat by a very slim margin.  Even with its Republican leaning, this seat could be a good one to watch and see if there is any “Trump effect” on the eventual outcome.

During his first term in office, Representative Iden has served as the Vice Chair of the Communications and Technology Committee.  Additionally, he is a member of the following committees; Regulatory Reform, Tax Policy, and Workforce and Talent Development.

Democratic Candidate:

  • John Fisher – Pastor.

    • General Endorsements – Michigan AFL-CIO.

Republican Candidate:

  • Brandt Iden – Former real estate business owner, Kalamazoo County Commissioner, Kalamazoo County Land Bank advisor.

    • Primary Endorsements – Michigan Realtors Association, Detroit Regional Chamber, SBAM Small BIZ PAC, Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Relentless Positive Action PAC.

Libertarian Candidate:

  • Ryan Winfield – Digital marketer, President-Elect of local American Marketing Association chapter.
