General Election Overview: 57th House District

Sep 06, 2016

Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).

District Overview

The 57th House District is located in Lenawee County in southeast Michigan.  The district has a 56% Republican base.

Commentary

Current State Representative Nancy Jenkins (R-Clayton) can’t run for reelection due to term limits.  As recently as 2010 the seat was held by a Democratic legislator.  Despite the strong Republican base and a strong candidate, the Democrats believe they still have a shot at the district.

Democratic Candidate:

  • Harvey Schmidt – Pharmacist, small business owner, former Tecumseh Mayor, former member of the Tecumseh City Council for twenty-four years.

    • Primary Endorsement – Michigan AFL-CIO.

Republican Candidate:

  • Bronna Kahle – Former senior center director, former small business owner.

    • Primary Endorsements – Detroit Regional Chamber, Great Lakes Education Project, Michigan Farm Bureau, Michigan Freedom Network.
    • General Endorsement – National Federation of Independent Business-Michigan.
