General Election Overview: 40th House District

Through the general election on November 3, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 40^th House District is located in Oakland County. The district includes Birmingham, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, and a portion of West Bloomfield Township.

Commentary

Democratic Representative Mari Manoogian is running for her second term in office. She is the first Armenian-American woman to serve in the Michigan House. The district has a 52% Republican base. Despite the base number, in 2016 President Trump only received 44.35% of the vote, while in 2018 Governor Whitmer received 59.18% of the vote.

- Military, Veterans and Homeland Security

Democratic Candidate:

- Representative Mari Manoogian – State Representative, worked at the Council on Foreign Relations, assisted former Ambassador Samantha Powers, worked at the Office of English Language Programs and eDiplomacy at the U.S. State Department

Republican Candidate:

- Kendra Cleary – Worked in sales with Turner Broadcasting, worked as VP/Sales Director for the Detroit office of ION Media networks, former sailboat racer
