General Election Overview: 3rd U.S. House District

Through the general election on November 8, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District

The 3^rd Congressional District is located in the west side of Michigan and includes portions of Kent, Ottawa, and Muskegon counties and the City of Grand Rapids, among others.

Commentary

This district is a near even split, with Republicans have only a slight advantage with a 50.1% base. Trump endorsed Republican candidate John Gibbs beat incumbent Congressman Peter Meijer in the primary race to win the party’s nomination. Given the divide, this seat has garnered national attention as both parties fight for majority in the United States House. This will be a race to watch this November as it’s seen as a toss-up.

Republican Candidate:

- John Gibbs – Served as Acting Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development at HUD and director of the Office of Personnel Management during the Trump administration, missionary, software developer.
