General Election Overview: 38th Senate District

Through the general election on November 6, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 38^th Senate District includes the majority of the Upper Peninsula.

Commentary

Due to term limits, Republican Senator Tom Casperson is serving his final term in this office. Both of the major party candidates are experienced in running for office, having been elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. While the district has a 54% Republican base, given it’s an off-year election and who the candidates are, this seat will be competitive this November.

Democratic Candidate:

Scott Dianda – State Representative, small business owner, former transportation maintenance worker for the Department of Transportation

Republican Candidate:

Ed McBroom – Former State Representative, dairy farmer
