General Election Overview: 34th Senate District

Sep 06, 2018

Through the general election on November 6, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

 District Overview

The 34th Senate District is located in Muskegon, Newaygo, and Oceana Counties.

 Commentary

Republican Senator Goeff Hansen is serving his second and final term in this office due to term limits. Progressive political newcomer Poppy Sias-Hernandez will be up against conservative former State Representative Jon Bumstead, who served three terms in the House of Reps. The district has a 54% Republican base, but because the seat is open, both parties are prepared to spend heavily here if polling shows Democrats picking up traction.

Democratic Candidate:

  • Poppy Sias-Hernandez – Certified Substance Abuse Prevention Specialists, Master Trainer in the Adverse Childhood Experiences study, directs a small non-profit, change management consultant

Republican Candidate:

  • Jon Bumstead – Former State Representative, owns a construction firm, served on the Brooks Township Planning Commission and the Newaygo County Building Review Board

 Libertarian Candidate:

  • Max Riekse – Retired school teacher and U.S. Army Veteran
