General Election Overview: 29th Senate District

Through the general election on November 6, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 29^th Senate District is located in Kent County and includes the City of Grand Rapids, City of East Grand Rapids and most of the Southeast corner of the county.

Commentary

Republican Senator Dave Hildenbrand is serving his second and final term in office due to term limits. The district has a near 50-50 split base and has been trending more Democratic over the past few elections. This race will be one of the most competitive in Michigan as two well-known current State Representatives are both hoping to represent this district.

Democratic Candidate:

Winnie Brinks – State Representative, former caseworker at The Source and executive director of a community-based corrections agency, former school paraprofessional.

Republican Candidate:

Chris Afendoulis – State Representative, small business owner, former auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers, former financial executive and vice president of finance at an automotive parts supplier, Certified Public Accountant, former Grand Rapids Township Treasurer and Township Trustee.

Libertarian Candidate:

Robert VanNoller
