General Election Overview: 24th Senate District

Through the general election on November 6, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 24th Senate District is located in Clinton, Eaton and Shiawassee Counties and a portion of Ingham County.

Commentary

Republican Senator Rick Jones is term limited from running for reelection in this seat, leaving it open. The district has a 56% Republican base but is seen as competitive this year. Republican candidate Tom Barrett is he a strong-campaigner and well-liked in his community. While Democratic candidate Kelly Rossman-McKinney has never held public office, she is a well-known and well-connected PR professional in the Capitol community.

Democratic Candidate:

  • Kelly Rossman-McKinney – Owns a public relations firm in Lansing, serves on the boards of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce and the Michigan Political Leadership Program.

Republican Candidate:

  • Tom Barrett – State Representative, U.S. Army Veteran, serves in the Michigan Army National Guard as a helicopter pilot, former analyst at the Michigan Department of Treasury.
