Through the general election on November 8, every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base, the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).

District Overview

The 21^st House District is located in Wayne County and includes Belleville and portions of Canton Township and Van Buren Township.

Commentary

Incumbent, Representative Kirsty Pagan, is running for her second term in the seat.  The district has a 54% Democratic base and it’s highly likely that Representative Pagan will win reelection to the seat.  Currently, Representative Pagan sits on the Appropriations and the Oversight and Ethics Committees.  Additionally, she serves on the follow Appropriations Subcommittees: Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education, of which she is the minority vice chairwoman.

Democratic Candidate:

• Kristy Pagan – Former education policy advisor for U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, small business owner.
  • Primary Endorsements – MI State AFL-CIO, American Federation of Teachers-MI, EMILY’s List, MI Association for Justice, MI Nurses Association, MI Education Association, MI Professional Fire Fighters Union, Planned Parenthood of MI, SEIU MI State Council, MI Credit Union League, the Detroit News, MI Realtors.

Republican Candidate:

• Derek Moss – Senior Intelligence Analyst with the City of Detroit Homeland Security and Management, former aide to former Congressman Thad McCotter.
