Commentary
This general election race will be one to watch in November as the district has a nearly split base, with the Republican party having a slight edge with a 50.9% base. Two current state representatives are in the race to represent this district next term. Representative Hertel comes from a family with deep ties in Michigan politics. His dad served in the House for 18 years, prior to term limits, including time as the co-Speaker of the House, and his brother currently serves in the Michigan Senate. His opponent, Representative Hornberger, was a schoolteacher in the district for 23 years and served on the school board for six years, giving her deep ties within her community. Given both candidates have campaign experience, and both have been elected to state-level offices, this race will be competitive and both sides will have to put in the work to win this year.
