Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).
District Overview
The 106th District in located in the northeast Lower Peninsula. It includes the counties of Alcona, Alpena, Iosco and Presque Isle, in addition to a portion of Cheboygan County. The district has a 54% Republican base.
Commentary
Representative Peter Pettalia (R-Presque Isle) can’t run for reelection in the seat due to term limits, leaving this seat open. The seat’s party base just barely favors the Republican candidate and as recently as 2010 this seat was represented by a Democratic legislator. However, due to the base in the seat, many Capitol news sources have placed this on their list of races to watch. While it would be tough, the House Democratic caucus may be making a run at this seat. In 2014, current Democratic nominee Robert Kennedy came extremely close to unseating Representative Pettalia in the general election and his chances could be better this year as the seat is open.
