General Election Overview: 101st House District

Oct 30, 2018

Through the general election on November 6, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

 District Overview

The 101st House District is located in Benzie, Leelanau, Manistee, and Mason Counties.

 Commentary

Representative Curt VanderWall (R) chose to run for an open Senate seat instead of a second term in this office. This district has a 58% Republican base but has voted closer to the 50/50 mark in some recent elections; including in the State House race in 2016 where the GOP received 54% of the vote and in 2014 the GOP candidate only received only 50.32% of the vote.

Democratic Candidate:

  • Kathy Wiejaczka – Retired registered nurse, owns a construction business with her husband, has served on the Empire Zoning Board of Appeals and the Leelanau County Solid Waste Council, worked as a captain for the Voters Not Politician ballot initiative, which will be on the ballot this November

Republican Candidate:

  • Jack O’Malley – Radio show host, worked on the Community Corrections Board and the Children’s Advocacy Center, chaired the 4th of July festivities and the local Memorial Day Services for the last 20 years
