Former State Legislator Announces Congressional Run

Jan 15, 2016

Former Michigan State Senator and Representative, Jason Allen, this week announced his run for the 1st United States House District.  He is running to replace retiring U.S. Representative Dan Benishek (R-Crystal Falls).  In 2010, Mr. Allen lost the Republican primary election for the seat to Congressman Benishek by only fifteen votes.  Prior to his announcement, Mr. Allen served as a senior policy advisor in the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency.  State Senator Tom Casperson (R-Escanaba) has also announced that he is running for the open seat and he received the endorsement of Congressman Benishek on Thursday.  Currently, the only announced candidate for the Democratic primary is Lon Johnson, the former head of the Michigan Democratic Party.  The 1st Congressional District is rather large, encompassing all of the Upper Peninsula and an upper portion of the Lower Peninsula.
