Former Senate Minority Leader Announces Gubernatorial Run

This week, former Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer filed paperwork to run in the Democratic Gubernatorial primary race in 2018. By filing to run, this will allow her to set up a campaign committee, which she can use to fundraise and spend money. There have been a few additional names floated as potential candidates in the Democratic primary race, however she is the first official candidate from either party to announce.

Former Senator Whitmer served in the Michigan House of Representatives for six years and in the Michigan Senate for eight years. The last four years in the Senate, she served as the Minority Leader. Last year she was appointed to serve as Ingham County Prosecutor, filling the remaining six months of the former prosecutor’s term following his resignation.
