On January 22, the Flint Water Advisory Task Force provided their recommendations to Governor Rick Snyder. First and foremost, they encourage a strong response in dealing with the challenges of re-establishing a reliable water distribution system. The task force’s other recommendations include;
• Engaging with the Environmental Protection Agency’s experts, empowering them to guide implementation of the water sampling program.
• Creating an inter-disciplinary work group of subject matter experts.
• The use of a third-party to assess the quality of drinking water in residences, schools, and child care settings.
• The task force should partner with local and state personnel in its activities in order to re-build the community’s trust.
• The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) should request assistance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in assessing the outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease. Additionally, they should request that the CDC provides support to healthcare facilities and healthcare providers on assessing and diagnosing Legionella.
• Lastly, MDHHS should keep the Flint community informed of its on-going efforts to prevent, detect, and treat Legionella.
Following the release of the recommendations, the Governor stated in a press release, “I appreciate the task force’s thoughtful work on these important issues, and we’ll move quickly as possible to determine the best way to achieve the results.”
