In the 2004 movie “Miracle”, which chronicled the 1980 USA Olympic Hockey Team that beat the Soviet Union, there is a scene where USA hockey coach Herb Brooks addresses his team before their game with the Russians. Coach Brooks starts his speech to the team by saying, “Great moments are born out of great opportunity”.
In the last two-weeks, our country has come to a sudden halt. Many states, including Michigan, have issued stay-at-home orders, shut down restaurants, and closed non-essential businesses. We are learning how to adapt and adjust to new normal in a short period of time. In my household, you will hear my three-year-old daughter or one-year old son playing (or more likely crying or screaming) in the background of conference calls. Many of us are turning bedrooms and basements into makeshift home offices. However, throughout these challenges, I have had that line from Coach Brooks in the back of my head.
Let me be clear, this health crisis is serious and not something that should be exploited. However, with new challenges also come opportunities to overcome. Here are three ways I’m working to make the best out of these challenging circumstances;
While social distancing memes are hilarious, communicating and maintaining professional relationships is something that needs to be intentional. I have been using video chat and FaceTime to maintain a personal connection with people rather than only using phone calls or texting. When we do not have the same level of personal interactions, which we are accustomed to, we need to maximize the technology we have at our fingertips.
For some, this “shut-down” has led to cancelled meeting and open calendars. Use this time as an opportunity to plan, prepare, and look ahead. The day-to-day businesses of jobs and careers doesn’t always allow periods of time to be prospective and proactive. Use this time as an opportunity.
While we all hope that this public health crisis will end in weeks, rather than months, we don’t control the timeline of this virus and should be prepared for a longer-term impact. Be creative in using this change in pace as an opportunity to work in a different environment and think creatively about how you message, communicate, and engage with others.
While this is a challenging time for everyone, keep the words that Coach Brooks said in the back of your head. Move forward and make the most of these trying times.
