Federal Government to End Michigan’s Medicaid Work Requirement

Apr 09, 2021

The Biden administration sent a letter to Michigan informing the state they are removing the state’s requirement that people receiving Medicaid work in order to receive benefits. The work requirement was approved under the Trump administration. As a federal program, the waiver was required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in order for the state to enact the requirement. Michigan was one of 12 states that placed this requirement on recipients.

Under the requirement, a Medicaid recipient was required to either work 80 hours per month, be a student, be looking for a job, volunteering, doing job training, participating in a tribal employment program, participating in rehab, doing vocational training, or doing an internship. There were a few exemptions allowed such as having a medical condition, being a main caretaker for a family member under the age of 6 or caring for a dependent with a disability.
