According to numbers released this week by the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget, Michigan’s seasonally adjusted February 2016 unemployment rate was 4.8%, a decrease of one-tenth of a percentage point. Total employment in the state increased by 36,000 last month, while the number of unemployed decreased by 4,000. The February 2016 rate is 1.1% lower than the February 2015 rate of 5.9%. Michigan’s rate has now fallen below the national average unemployment rate of 4.9%. The last time that occurred was July 2015, prior to that the last time the state’s rate was below the national rate was August 2000.
The unemployment rate for the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn market was 5.8% for the month, a slight decline of one-tenth of a percentage point from the prior month. However, it is a decline of nine-tenths of a percentage point from the February 2015 rate.
