Michigan will become the first in the United States to have a public wireless in-road charging system allowing electric vehicles to charge while in motion and stationery. The pilot program was first announced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2021. Since that time, a company has been selected to lead the design, evaluation, iteration, testing, and implementation of the pilot program. The project is currently slated for up to a one mile stretch of both dynamic and stationary wireless EV charging in Detroit. The goal is to be operational as of 2023. The Michigan Department of Transportation is providing $1.9 million in funding toward the pilot program.
