Elections Director Announces Retirement

Mar 03, 2017

This week, State Elections Director Christopher Thomas announced that he will retire in June.  In 1981, then-Secretary of State Richard Austin (D), appointed Mr. Thomas as the state’s elections director, a position he has held since the initial appointment.  He began his career in elections administration in 1974 by working for the United States House of Representatives and later the Federal Election Commission.  His successor has not yet been named.

The Bureau of Elections works with the 1,600 clerks of the state’s counties, cities, and townships, providing training and assist local election officials with their duties.  The bureau is responsible for administering the state’s Qualified Voter File, and Michigan election, campaign finance, and lobbyist disclosure laws.
