Election Results Shake Up House and Senate Membership

Nov 03, 2021

Yesterday, local elections were held across Michigan, of which a few will impact the makeup of the House and Senate. Representative Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) won his election to serve as the next Mayor of Dearborn, leaving his House seat open. In addition, two special general elections were also held to fill empty Senate seats.

    • 8th Senate District located in Macomb County has been vacant since former Senator Pete Lucido resigned after winning election as Macomb County Prosecutor. Representative Doug Wozniak (R-Shelby Twp.) won the special primary race and will be sworn in as State Senator for the remainder of the term ending January 1, 2023.
    • The 28th Senate District located in Kent County was left open after former Senator Pete MacGregor resigned after he won election as Kent County Treasurer. Representative Mark Huizenga (R-Walker) won last night’s election and will serve as the next Senator for this district. He will also serve the remainder of the term ending January 1, 2023.

As a result, Representatives Wozniak and Huizenga state House seats will be vacant. Overall, the House will only have 106 seated members, four short of the full 110 membership, due to the three members leaving and the recent passing of Representative Andrea Schroeder. It will now take 54 members to vote in favor of legislation in order for a bill to pass.
