Election Reform Legislation Signed into Law

May 04, 2018

On Thursday, Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation into law making several reforms to our election system. The legislation aims to improve the process, make elections more accountable to voters, and reduce voter fraud. The new laws:

  • Require the Secretary of State to check the statewide qualified voter file against the U.S. Social Security Administration’s death master file on a monthly basis.
  • Removes obsolete provisions and modernizes current language in the state’s election laws.
  • Requires electronic voting systems to utilize a paper ballot for tabulation purposes.
  • Adds language to the recount section to expound on what constitutes an “aggrieved candidate.”
  • Eliminates conflicting statutory references related to accepted forms of ID for voting purposes and codifies current practices allowed by the Bureau of Elections.
  • Increases the fee for a recount from $125 per precinct to $250 per precinct under certain circumstances.
