Election Preview – State Races

Nov 03, 2016

Next week, Michigan voters are taking to the polls to vote on several races.  On Tuesday, the MLC Blog outlined the two open Congressional seats in Michigan.  While Federal level races tend to get the most attention, state races are also important as they have a big effect on Michigan resident’s everyday lives.

In the legislature all one-hundred and ten State Representative seats are up for election next week.  Additionally, there are three open seats where candidates will by vying for a partial term, ending January 1, 2017, due to two deaths and one resignation of State Representatives this past year.  While Senate members are not up for election this year, there is one open seat in the 4th Senate District after the resignation of Virgil Smith earlier this year.

There are also several statewide races on the ballot this year.  There are eleven candidates vying for two open seats on the State Board of Education.  Among the candidates, is current State Board President, John Austin.  Also on the ballot this November are two positions for Regent of the University of Michigan, two positions as Trustee of Michigan State University and two positions for Governor of Wayne State University.

On the Judicial front, there are two incumbent Justice of the Supreme Court running for reelection; Justice David Viviano and Justice Joan Larsen.  While Justice Viviano is running for a full eight-year term, Justice Larsen was appointed to the bench in September 2015 by Governor Rick Snyder and thus is running to complete the term ending January 1, 2019.  Additionally, there are several Court of Appeals, Circuit, Probate, and District Court Judicial races on the ballot.

Throughout the state there will also be local races and proposals on the ballot this year in many communities.  To find your specific voter information, please visit Michigan.gov/vote.
