Election Audits Complete

Mar 05, 2021

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced that all of the state’s more than 250 election audits of the November 2020 general election are complete, confirming the accuracy of the election. More than 1,300 Republican, Democratic, and nonpartisan clerks, as well as the Bureau of Elections, participated in the audits. In addition to the audits of local election precincts, a statewide audit exercise was completed by hand-counting randomly selected votes cast for president on more than 18,000 ballots.

Results include:

    • Detroit – 83% of the counting boards were balanced or explained and just 17 out of the 174,000 absentee ballots were out of balance
    • Grand Rapids – 87% were balanced or explained and only eight ballots were out of balance
    • Livonia – 77% were balanced or explained, and just one ballot was out of balance
    • Sterling Heights – 71% were balanced or explained, and just four ballots were out of balance

Balanced or explained means that in each of those boards the number of ballots matched the number of names in the poll book, or that the imbalance could be explained in such a way that the counting board would be recountable.
