When the state rolled out plans to assign a new Medicaid tax to hospitals and similar care institutions, Erickson Living – a Continuing Care Retirement Center (CRCC) – found itself on the list to be included. As CRCCs are focused on providing amenities that cater to any age post-retirement, its capabilities include offering many healthcare services. This resident benefit resulted in the facilities being forced into a broader category that it didn’t belong in – with an impending tax that could total more than $1 million annually.
How MLC drove success for Erickson:
After attempts to initiate conversations in Lansing, and without reaching the right people, Erickson engaged MLC to make important introductions that resulted in increased awareness of a CRCC’s scope of services. Detailed analysis developed by the MLC team, and veteran legislative representation from Brendan Ringlever, resulted in CRCCs being excluded from the Medicaid bed tax, and it now serves as a national model of success for the company to present when faced with the same challenge in other states.
