On Friday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) released its “Michigan Health and Wellness 4 x 4 Plan Progress Report 2012-2015,” summarizing the state’s progress to prevent and control obesity, reduce chronic disease, and build a stronger, healthier Michigan. Governor Rick Snyder earlier tasked the department with addressing the issue of obesity in Michigan, one of the state’s most pressing health issues. Data shows that two-thirds of Michigan adults and one-third of children are either overweight or obese.
The report outlines the $1.7 million in state funds and the $3.5 million earned in federal grants that have helped the 4 x 4 Plan reach two million Michigan residents. According to the department, the state has made significant progress over the past few years with childhood obesity rates leveling off, moving from the fifth to the sixteenth most obese state in the nation.
The 4 x 4 Plan promotes prevention through healthy diet, regular exercise, regular physical exams, and encourages the tracking of blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, and body weight. The efforts were supported by three major initiatives, including, a public awareness campaign; working with communities to improve access to health food and safe places for physical activity, and the 4 x 4 Partnership promoting health workplaces and wellness at work.
