Department of Civil Rights Names Interim Director

John E. Johnson, Jr. has been named interim director of the Department of Civil Rights by the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. Mr. Johnson currently serves as the department’s legislative liaison and special advisor to the commission. He will begin his new role on June 2 and will continue to serve until the commission selects a permanent director. The appointment follows the resignation of the previous director, James White, after being named interim Detroit Police Chief.

Prior to his time at the department, Mr. Johnson served as executive director of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus and held several leadership positions including corporate counsel for the City of Detroit, general counsel to the Detroit NAACP, and hearing officer for the Michigan Tax Tribunal. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Howard University and a Juris Doctor from Valparaiso University.
