Democratic Response to the State of the State

Jan 22, 2016

Following Governor Rick Snyder’s annual State of the State address on Tuesday, House Minority Leader Tim Greimel (D-Auburn Hills) provided the Democratic response. Rep. Greimel highlighted several top priorities of the Democratic caucus, including;

•    Greater government transparency and accountability
•    Additional campaign finance reporting
•    Personal financial disclosure for legislators and top administrative officials
•    Universal Pre-K education
•    Creating better post-high school educational opportunities by instituting a tuition freeze at all state-supported community colleges and higher universities
•    Create better paying jobs that help families get ahead, close the gender pay gap, and ensure trade jobs are paid a fair wage

While he appreciated the Governor’s call for a bipartisan solution on the Flint water crises, he reserved his harshest comments for this subject.  Leader Greimel stated Lansing bureaucrats and politicians endangered the health of thousands of children in order to save money.  He called for a change to the way Lansing does business, stating that under Republican leadership the government has not looked after the wellbeing of Michigan residents.  Leader Greimel stated that the most tragic example of the failure of the Republican Legislature has been the Flint water crisis, stating Lansing failed at one of the core functions of government, which is protecting citizen’s health.
