Democratic Caucuses Announce ‘Health Care Bill of Rights’

On Monday, members of the House and Senate Democratic caucuses announced a new plan to resist cuts to health care, which have passed the U.S. House of Representatives. Their plan would shield hundreds of thousands of Michigan families who may see their costs increase and coverage reduced under the federal proposal.

The plan, the ‘Michigan Health Care Bill of Rights,’ would keep parts of the Affordable Care Act in place in Michigan in the event the American Health Care Act is passed. The Democratic caucuses’ plan would:

Prevent people with pre-existing conditions from losing their protections.
Ban insurance companies from increasing the rates of seniors and older people who aren’t eligible for Medicare.
Stop insurance companies from raising the rates or adding coverage caps on people who get sick and need treatment.
Protect essential health benefits, including maternity and newborn care, preventative care, and emergency services.
Insurance companies would be banned from imposing coverage caps.
