This week, members of the House and Senate Democratic caucuses introduced legislation aimed at mandating a paid sick leave program in Michigan. The legislation, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich (D-Flint) and Representative Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit), would allow workers to take earned paid time off to recover from an illness, care for a sick family member, or recover after a violent crime. Furthermore, the bills would require employers to allow workers to accrue one hour of sick leave for every thirty hours they work, regardless of whether an employee is part-time or full-time. The bills include protections for LGBT families, grandparents raising children, domestic partners raising children, and single-parent families. According to data from the Michigan League for Public Policy, five states and Washington D.C. have sick leave laws. The Senate bill was referred to the Senate Commerce Committee and the House bill to the House Commerce and Trade Committee for consideration.
