According to numbers released this week by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget (DTMB), Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December 2015 was 5.1%. While the rate didn’t change from the prior month, it is noticeably lower than the December 2014 rate of 6.4%. The state’s labor force grew by 0.8% from December 2014 to December 2015, slightly below the national average of 1.1%. However, despite the steady rate statewide, the unemployment rate in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area’s increased to 6.2%, the third consecutive month that it has increased.
DTMB also released preliminary data for 2015. The preliminary annual average for the 2015 unemployment rate is 5.4%, a decrease from 2014’s rate of 7.3%. Additionally, the 2015 rate is the lowest it has been since 2001, when the unemployment rate was 5.2%. Preliminary data for the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area has their average unemployment rate for 2015 at 6.2%, a decrease from the 2014 annual rate of 8.5%.
