Last month, Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.3% was unchanged from the prior month. December’s rate was 0.8% lower than the December 2021 unemployment rate. Employment in Michigan edged down by 1,000, while unemployment remained unchanged. The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in December advanced to 3.7%. While this was the slightest increase from November’s rate of 3.6%, it is a significant decline from the December 2021 rate of 5.3%.
The preliminary 2022 annual average unemployment rate was 4.3%, a reduction of 1.6% from the 2021 annual average rate of 5.9%, and 5.7% below the 2020 pandemic annual rate of 10%. While the state has made notable gains to return to pre-pandemic unemployment levels, last year’s rate was slightly above the 2019 annual average pre-pandemic rate of 4.1%.
