According to numbers released this week by the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget, Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in December increased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 5.0%. During the month, the workforce grew by 14,000, as total employment grew by 9,000 and the number of unemployed increased by 5,000. While the month-to-month rate saw a slight increase, the December 2015 rate is one-tenth of a percentage point below the December 2015 rate of 5.1%.
The December 2016 unemployment rate in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn market held steady from the prior month at 5.6%. This rate is five-tenths of a percentage point lower than the December 2015 rate of 6.1%. The regions workforce increased by 6,000, as total employment grew by 4,000 and the number of unemployed saw only a minor change.
