The annual sales cap for cottage food businesses would increase under legislation approved by the House this week. The cottage food industry includes foods that don’t require time and/or temperature control for safety and can be produced in a home kitchen for direct sales to customers at farmers markers, farm markets, roadside stands, or other direct markets. The legislation would increase the annual sales cap from $25,000 to $40,000, allow sales via the internet and mail, and creates an optional registration system. The plan also ties further cap increases to inflation. The bills will be sent to the Senate for consideration.
