Conference Committees Report Budgets

This week, conference committees met and signed conference reports for the budgets for the upcoming 2018-2019 Fiscal Year. This is the last step in the process prior to the full House and Senate voting on the finalized versions of the budgets.

Highlights include:

  • The closure of a second state prison
  • $2.4 million to expand education to high-security prisoners
  • $2 million for an enhanced food technology program to train prisoners for jobs in the food service industry
  • Funding for 75 new state troopers
  • An increase of $3.2 million to community colleges operating costs
  • $84.1 million funds for the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission
  • $330 million in additional funding for infrastructure improvements
  • $1.75 million for county fairs
  • $3 million for medical marijuana law enforcement
  • 2% increase to university operations
  • $6 million additional funding for the Tuition Incentive Program
  • $4.75 million to address PFAS
  • Across the board funding increase of $120 per-pupil in K-12 schools
  • $1.5 million for kindergarten assessments
  • $30 million to create a School Mental Health and Support Services Fund

The conference reports will be sent to the House and Senate for final consideration. They are expected to vote on the budgets next week, well ahead of the September 30 deadline. The new fiscal year begins on October 1, 2018.
