The first conference committee met on Thursday and unanimously approved the Community Colleges budget for the 2016-2017 Fiscal Year. The conference committee approved increasing funding by an average 1.4%, which is 1.0% lower than Governor Rick Snyder called for in his budget announcement in February. The additional funding will vary amongst colleges, ranging from 1.1% to 2%. Earlier in the process, the House passed a 3.4% increase and the Senate passed an increase of 2.4%. However, following the lower than projected revenues reported at the Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference, the increase was revised lower. The conference report will be referred to the House and Senate floors for final approval.
Conference committees for the remaining budgets have been scheduled to meet next week. Several of those budgets are anticipated to also reduce overall funding due to the lower than estimated state revenue dollars.
