Committees Act on Bills Prohibiting Taxation of Food

Sep 29, 2017

As we wrote last week, legislation has been introduced in the House and Senate prohibiting local units of government from imposing an excise tax on the production, distribution, and sale of food.  The proposal was put forth after other cities nationwide have adopted such a tax, causing harm to grocery stores, food production, and employment in the area.

Senator Peter MacGregor’s (R-Rockford) bill was reported by the Senate Michigan Competitiveness Committee this week, following a hearing where committee members heard testimony from several organizations.  The bill has been sent to the Senate floor for consideration.

In the House, Representative Rob VerHeulen’s (R-Walker) legislation received a hearing from the House Michigan Competitiveness Committee.  Committee members had the opportunity to hear testimony on the proposal, as well as ask questions about the legislation.  The bill remains in the committee awaiting further consideration.
