Coast Guard Approves Straits of Mackinac Protection Measure

Oct 19, 2018

The United States Coast Guard approved a Straits of Mackinac “no anchor” zone, which provides protections and safeguards to Michigan’s waters and the utility infrastructure in the area. Boats dropping anchors in the area where there is utility infrastructure could cause severe environmental damage and threaten to disrupt critical energy and communication services. In May, Governor Rick Snyder approved a temporary emergency state rule prohibiting anchoring in the Straits. “In addition to the no anchor zone, the state entered into an agreement with the owner of Line 5 to put into place additional measures to protect Michigan’s waters. The Straits of Mackinac are critical to our state and Governor Snyder has been utilizing a multifaceted approach to ensure they are protected,” explained Tony Des Chenes of MLC.

The new “no anchor” zone goes into effect on October 31 and prohibits vessels from anchoring or loitering without permission within a designated area. Vessels will be prohibited from anchoring over any charted, submerged cable and pipeline within the “no anchor” area unless the crew received permission from the Captain of the Port of Sault. Ste. Marie, or a designated representative. Loitering does not include brief stops by companies offering sight-seeing, ferrying, or tourism services.
