The Michigan Civil Rights Commission voted this week to appoint John E. Johnson, Jr. as permanent executive director of the Department of Civil Rights. Mr. Johnson has been serving as interim executive director since May 24. Prior to his appointment as interim director, he served as the department’s legislative liaison and special advisor to the commission. Prior to working within the department, Mr. Johnson served as executive director of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus. He’s also previously worked for the City of Detroit, the Detroit NAACP, the Michigan Tax Tribunal, among other positions. Mr. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard University and a Juris Doctorate from Valparaiso University.
