Chairman Seeks to Expand Electric Choice

Feb 23, 2018

This week, the House Energy Policy Committee heard testimony on legislation expanding electric choice to the agriculture industry. The bill was sponsored by Representative Gary Glenn (R-Williams Township), who also serves as Chairman of the committee. Under his proposal, those in agricultural production or processing operations would be allowed to purchase their electricity from an alternative electric supplier (AES). Currently in Michigan there is a 10% cap on how many users may purchase their energy from an AES. This legislation would exempt the agriculture industry from that cap. During the hearing, the committee heard from several groups who stated energy costs are one of their highest expenses and if they could enter the choice market they could potentially save money and make production more effective. The legislation remains in the committee awaiting further consideration.
