Candidates for Governor and US Senate Make Announcements

Jun 30, 2017

This week two candidates moved forward with plans to run in the 2018 election.  On Monday, Dr. Jim Hines, filed signatures with the Secretary of State’s office to run in the Republican primary race for governor.  He is the first to officially file a petition to enter the race.  Dr. Hines served as an OBGYN for the last thirty-years, in addition to traveling worldwide to provide medical care.  He is the immediate past chief of the medical staff at Covenant HealthCare and owns a medical practice.  Additionally, Dr. Hines is the national president of the Christian Medical and Dental Association.

On the National front, former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Robert Young announced his candidacy for the US Senate seat currently held by Senator Debbie Stabenow (D).  The former Justice served on the state’s highest court from 1999 until his resignation this year.  Prior to his time on the bench, he was a private practice attorney.  He graduated with honors from Harvard College and received his law degree from Harvard Law School.  “Senator Stabenow has held this seat since 2001, winning re-election comfortably in 2006 and 2012. It is extremely difficult to unseat an incumbent and if Michigan Republicans want to win this seat back for the first time in 18-years, they will need to run an exceptional campaign and spend a significant amount of resources,” stated Matt Sowash of MLC.  Thus far, the only other candidate officially in the race is Lena Epstein, but there are several other names being floated around as possible candidates.
