Earlier this month Governor Gretchen Whitmer called for special primary and general elections to fill the vacancy in the 4th House District due to the passing of former Representative Isaac Robinson. Candidates wishing to run in the primary election for the seat had to option file for the remainder of the former representative’s term, ending on December 31, 2020, and/or for the next full two-year term beginning on January 1, 2021.
As of Thursday, April 23, for the partial term, fourteen Democratic candidates have filed. For the full term beginning next year, seventeen Democratic candidates have filed and one Republican candidate. This district is heavily Democratic, and the winner of the primary elections is all but assured a victory in November.
The special primary election will be held on Tuesday, August 4 and the special general election will be held on Tuesday, November 3. Both dates coincide with the regular election dates for this year. The 4th House District is located in Wayne County. It includes the City of Hamtramck and a portion of the City of Detroit.
