This week, the House and Senate began naming members to serve on the conference committees for each of the budgets for the upcoming 2016-2017 Fiscal Year. Both chambers have passed their own versions of the budgets and will now come together to work through their points of differences to reach an agreement. Conference committees consist of three members from the House and three from the Senate, with two of those from the majority party and one member of the minority party. Once conference committees have met and come to an agreement, they will each send their conference reports to the House and Senate floors for a vote.
Some of the big remaining issues to be worked on through the process are funding for Detroit Public Schools and the Flint water crisis; addressing the Insurance Tax Credit, currently at $80 million; the closure of two prisons that the Senate has called for; and making necessary budget cuts as a result of the lower than projected revenue numbers.
