Budget Bills Continue to Move Forward

Jun 02, 2017

This week, legislative movement continued on the budget for the upcoming 2017-2018 Fiscal Year.  Following last week’s approval of the budgets in different forms, the House and Senate appointed conference committee members for each of the budgets.  Additionally, a few of the conference committees negotiated agreements and voted to report their budget from the committee this week.  The four budgets that were reported and highlights include:

Department of Insurance and Financial Services

  • Restores a provision prohibiting disciplinary action against an employee communicating with the legislature

Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs

  • $10 million for regulating medical marihuana
  • Additional funding to increase Liquor Control Commission investigations

Department of Military and Veterans Affairs

  • Restores full funding for the National Guard tuition assistance
  • Additional funding for the state’s veterans homes

Michigan State Police

  • Funding for 150 new state troopers
  • $600,000 for sexual assault prevention grants

These four budgets will be sent to the House and Senate floors for a final vote.  Additional conference committees are slated to meet during the upcoming week.
