Bills Reported Removing Permit Requirement for Concealed Carry

Jun 02, 2017

On Tuesday, the House Judiciary Committee reported a four-bill package that would allow residents to carry a concealed pistol without a permit or without the currently mandated training.  The legislation has been hotly contested, mostly along party lines, since its introduction.  During committee testimony, it was fiercely debated by advocates and opponents to the change and will most likely continue to see such strong opposing forces as it continues through the process.

In an earlier hearing, committee members heard concerns from law enforcement that the original proposal stripped the requirement of informing a police officer that you are carrying a concealed pistol.  However, prior to being report by the committee, a substitute was adopted to add in the requirement and provides a $100 penalty for failure to disclose.

After being reported on a party line vote, the bill package was sent to the House floor for further consideration.
