Bills Introduced Changing Primary Date

Jun 10, 2016

On Thursday, House Majority Floor Leader Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton) introduced a package of legislation moving the August primary date to June.  Under his proposal, while the month the elections would be held changes, the primary would continue to be held on the Tuesday following the first Monday in the month.  Representative Nesbitt’s legislation would not affect when the parties hold conventions to nominate candidates.  The legislation also changes the date of when an election can be held to consolidate a township from August to June and changes from May to March the date when an election can be held to annex an intermediate school district.  It also amends the date of an election for a new circuit court judgeship to the proposed June primary date.  The four-bill package has been referred to the House Elections Committee for further consideration.
