The Senate passed legislation introduced by Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Senator Jim Stamas (R-Midland) changing the implementation date for the budget deadline. Two years ago, as part of the budget process, a July 1 deadline was enacted requiring the legislature to pass and present the budget to the governor by July 1, beginning in 2020. Senator Stamas’ bill would change the law to state the July 1 deadline would not begin until 2022, the second consecutive year it would be pushed back. While the new Fiscal Year for state government doesn’t begin until October 1 each year, schools put together their budgets for the upcoming school year during the summer. As their funding relies on what the state appropriates, they have always pushed to have the budget completed in June, which allows them ample time to get a budget in place before the new school year. The bill will be sent to the House for consideration.
