Auto Insurance Reform Drives Forward

Jan 18, 2019

This week, auto insurance reform was the first Senate bill to be introduced in the new legislative term. Introduced by Senator Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton), the bill provides relief for consumers by addressing the root causes of Michigan’s car insurance rates. It would allow drivers over the age of 62 the option of allowing Medicare or their other lifetime healthcare benefits to cover medical costs. Furthermore, it provides younger drivers the ability to choose an amount of coverage. “There have been several unsuccessful attempts over the past few years to reform Michigan’s auto no-fault insurance system. Both Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield and Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey have placed this issue at the top of their lists of priorities,” explained Matt Sowash of MLC. The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Insurance and Banking for consideration.

In the House, Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield (R-Levering) announced the formation of a special temporary committee tasked with crafting a solution to the state’s expensive auto insurance premiums. Representative Jason Wentworth (R-Clare) will serve as chair of the committee.
