Attorney General Ramps Up Price-Gouging Investigations

Attorney General Dana Nessel recently assigned a team of special agents to assist her attorneys in gathering information related to the high number of price-gouging complaints her office has received. The team is comprised of highly trained criminal investigators and they will help her office visit stores to evaluate details of complaints, assist with online research to compare pricing, and receive phone calls or letters from consumers. The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection intake team is receiving new complaints every day, including online marketplaces.

Michigan’s Consumer Protection Act:

Applies to goods and services leased or purchased for personal, family and household purposes.
Prohibits price gouging, failing to reveal facts material to a sale, misrepresenting the source or geographic origin of goods or services, and many other business practices.
Gives the Attorney General the power to investigate and the authority to sue.
